Specialized Training in Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery

A Board-Certified Veterinary Dentist® is a veterinarian who has completed advanced training focused specifically on dentistry, oral surgery, and diseases of the mouth and jaw.

After veterinary school, these specialists complete additional clinical training, including an internship and residency, and must meet the credentialing requirements of the American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC)® and pass a comprehensive specialty examination. This additional training provides extensive experience diagnosing and treating complex dental and oral conditions. For more information, please visit the AVDC website.

When Might Your Pet Need a Veterinary Dental Specialist?

Many primary care veterinarians provide important routine dental care, including dental cleanings, radiographs, and extractions.

For more complex conditions, your veterinarian may recommend referral to a Board-Certified Veterinary Dentist® for advanced evaluation or treatment.

For pets with complex medical histories, specialty care may also be beneficial when general anesthesia carries added risk. Our experience performing dental and oral procedures efficiently, with careful anesthetic planning and monitoring, can help support safer, more streamlined care, even when the dental procedure itself is relatively routine.

Specialty care may include:

  • Complex dental extractions
  • Root canal therapy
  • Advanced periodontal disease
  • Oral and maxillofacial surgery
  • Jaw fractures and facial trauma
  • Oral masses and tumors
  • Malocclusions and orthodontic conditions
  • Advanced dental imaging

Partnering With Your Primary Veterinarian

Specialty dental care is often one part of a pet’s broader healthcare, which is why collaboration with your primary veterinarian is so important.

When a patient is referred to Prism, we work alongside their veterinary team and provide clear communication throughout evaluation and treatment. Once specialty care is complete, patients return to their primary veterinarian for continued overall care.

Our goal is to serve as a trusted dental and oral surgery resource for both pet owners and the veterinarians who care for them.
