Persephone & Romeo

Treated by
Dr. Jordan Ford

Romeo & Persephone are littermates who both have cerebellar hypoplasia (CH), a congenital, neurological condition in which the cerebellum is smaller than usual or not completely developed. Cerebellar hypoplasia affects their coordination and balance, making them appear quite unsteady on their feet. While this condition doesn't define them, it does require special attention, especially when it comes to procedures that require anesthesia.

Persephone was brought in for an evaluation due to potential periodontal disease concerns. Upon a conscious examination, Dr. Ford noticed mild to moderate periodontal disease. Romeo's visit aimed to address several deciduous teeth that had overstayed their welcome, crowding the adult teeth and inciting periodontal disease. Additionally, one of his adult upper canine teeth was either congenitally absent or had failed to erupt. As Dr. Ford conducted his examination, he not only identified these retained teeth but also noted the presence of periodontal disease.

Cats like Romeo and Persephone can safely undergo anesthesia, but it's crucial to monitor them adequately throughout their procedure and to be especially mindful of their postoperative recovery period due to their underlying neurologic concerns.

The team at Prism Veterinary Dentistry understands the importance of comprehensive monitoring and ensures that all patients receive this type of attentive care.

As the anesthesia took effect and the evaluations and radiographs began, Persephone's dental journey took a fortunate turn. She didn't require any extractions. Instead, she received a comprehensive scaling and polishing after her radiographs were complete. During Romeo's examination, it became evident that all his remaining deciduous teeth needed extraction. The full mouth dental radiographs confirmed his upper left canine tooth was impacted below the gumline, requiring extraction as well. Romeo's case highlights the importance of thorough dental examinations and the value of full mouth radiographs to assess oral health and treatment needs accurately.
